My New Venture, Screen Printing

June 22, 2011 - 9:49 am 2 Comments

Wow it has been over a year since I have posted to this blog.  I cannot believe how time has flown and all that has happened in a year.  I have lost a dear friend, moved my Daughter, again.  We have dealt with problems with our aging parents, and many other small things that have totally distracted me from focusing on my blog, and also my new venture, Screen Printing.

We purchased a screen printing machine and I am needing to focus on designing, buying, getting the screens ready, printing, and then marketing the products I produce.  I am hoping that things will calm down in our personal life to where I can focus on my new venture. Wish me luck.

Recent graduate from Texas Tech’s School of Communication Design, Cari Caldwell shares one of her projects, Java Nest Coffee. Take a look below.

“My concept for my packaging is a retro feeling coffee. It is a series of coffee that uses the onomatopoeia s for the various blends of coffee, such as Cock-a-doodle-doo for breakfast blend. The brand name I made up was Java Nest Coffee because of the bird theme. This was an open project for my student portfolio, and was awarded “Best Packaging” in Texas Tech’s senior portfolio show for Communication Design. ”

Cadillac Ranch, on Route 66, Amarillo Texas

Cadillac Ranch

Cadillac Ranch

The Cadillac Ranch - Another famous attraction in Amarillo, Texas, on Route 66. It is a public art installation and sculpture.  It was created in 1974 by Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez and Doug Michels, who were a part of the art group “Ant Farm Group” and was sponsored by Stanley Marsh 3, an artist, philanthropist and prankster from Amarillo, Texas.

In Pop Culture -  A tribute to the “Cadillac Ranch” was featured in the Walt Disney and Pixar film “Cars” , a movie about the Mother Road “Route 66″.  The fictional town of Radiator Springs, which sits at the edge of an area referenced on a map as the “Cadillac Range”, and throughout the movie, rock formations shaped like the cars, buried in the ground, can be seen as a horizon backdrop.

“Cadillac Ranch” is the name of a Bruce Springsteen song on his 1980 album “The River”. There is also a song called “Cadillac Ranch” by the late John Stewart, on his album “Rough Sketches“, which is about Route 66. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band also has a song called “Cadillac Ranch” in which the iconic Cadillac is praised.

In 2008, Cadillac Ranch can be seen in the musical video for the song, “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked” by The Caged Elephant. All outdoor shots in the 2009 video of Brooks and Dunn’s song “Honky Tonk Stomp” were filmed at the Cadillac Ranch.

The cars are forever changing, as people are encouraged to bring their own cans of spray paint and add their mark to the Iconic piece of art.  The cars are right in the middle of a wheat field, south of the Interstate 40 (Route 66) Just west of Amarillo.

The above picture is of my pencil sketch of the ranch.  I have in the works a painting of the ranch from a different angle, which I will post as soon as I am finished.  ;-)

U Drop Inn, Shamrock, Texas, Route 66

April 23, 2010 - 10:09 pm 2 Comments

This is the beginning of a series of paintings I intend to do for my new website, which is not up yet but will be as soon as I get some more paintings done.  The website is www.Route66Artist.com.

I wanted this picture to have a retro look about it, almost like a picture drawn in a comic book.  I may try to carry this style throughout the rest of my paintings in this series.

FYI, this is a building that is here in my hometown of Shamrock, Texas.  It is located on the crossroads of Route 66 and highway 83.  The building has been restored, and it has neon lights, and is beautiful at night.  It’s very unusual architecture has made it one of the most photographed buildings on Route 66.  It was featured in Disney’s Pixar Movie, “Cars”, as Ramone’s body shop.

Wish me Luck,
